Signs You Need an Air Filter Replacement

Signs You Need an Air Filter Replacement

Throughout the year, your home and business can be exposed to a wide range of pollutants, allergens, and bacteria that can cause issues for your family, pets, guests, and employees. As one of the main barriers between these particles being circulated into the air around your property, is the air filter.

Designed to properly catch and trap these particles, a high-efficiency filter will not only improve the air quality of your home but improve the efficiency of your HVAC systems. While most air conditioning and heating systems have working filters to begin with, they can wear down over time and become less effective at stopping dirt, dust, and pollen from finding its way through your ductwork.

Unfortunately, it can be quite hard to identify if your air filter is working to its full capabilities or if it needs to be replaced. Below are a few signs that can indicate you may need an air filter replacement:

Reduced Airflow: Your vents are designed to move fresh and clean air to each room in your home. However, the buildup of dust can cause less airflow to make it to those rooms, causing your rooms to get muggy and warmer than usual.

Dirty Filter: While it may seem like common sense, monitoring the air filter itself can be the best way of knowing when to replace it or not. If there appears to be an accumulation of black dirt and dust, that could be a good indicator that it needs to be replaced. However, certain systems have the filter more out of sight which can be hard to pinpoint if you don’t know where to look.

Increased Energy Bills: When the filter becomes clogged or partly covered with clumps of dust and hair, your HVAC system will be forced to work harder to move air throughout your property. This not only leads to an ineffective system, but to higher energy bills.

As a good rule to follow, air filters should be replaced once every 3 months to ensure your systems can work at peak efficiency without having to worry about exposing your property to allergens and pollutants.

The Importance of an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Inspection

As a negative side effect to having a poor air filter besides trapping dirt and dust, is the release of poor air quality throughout your property. The pollutants in the air can be odorless but cause serious health risks, including cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and worsening respiratory illnesses.

With this in mind, we recommend thorough indoor air quality inspections to help identify areas in your home or business that may be causing an issue or sections of your ductwork that should be cleaned.
